AIM Framework glossary
Belief-Conditioned Status Estimate
Canonical definition
The quantity the Decision Hub computes when one Individual values another as a target of dealing: the expected value of dealing with the target, net of the cost of dealing with them, taken as an expectation under the assigning Individual's Belief about the target, where that Belief is dominated by a prior furnished by transmitted regard (how visibly others value the target) and updated by the target's own conduct only in proportion to the target's responsiveness. Its purely comparative, conduct-insensitive form is the definitional limit reached as target responsiveness goes to zero. The public quantity Status is the population-scale low-pass-filtered aggregate of the Belief-Conditioned Status Estimate and is the target's standing; the relative position the Observer computes of one Individual against another is the signed difference of their standings (Appendix A, Sections A.9.2 and A.10.2). Formalised as Σ at Appendix A.11 (the estimate at A.11.0 to A.11.2; the live coupled form at A.11.4; the condensation at A.11.6).
Explanation
When you evaluate another person's qualities, your mind is really working out one thing: how much is dealing with this person worth to me, once I subtract what dealing with them will cost me. The catch is that your starting answer is mostly built from what everyone else already seems to think of them, not from anything they have actually done in front of you. What they do can shift your estimate, but only as much as they are the kind of person whose behaviour actually tells you something; where it tells you little, your estimate barely moves off the reputation you walked in with. Pile up everybody's private estimates of one person and average out the personal quirks, and what is left, the shared part everyone agrees on, is what we call that person's Status.
