AIM Framework glossary
High-Theatre
Canonical definition
High-Theatre describes any environment, arena, procedure, or communication in which visibility, audience presence, and public comparison are structurally maximised, whether or not the visibility serves the task, the parties, or the observers, such that participation becomes a Status performance: it elevates wM, triggers Source Opacity, and drives participants toward Mimetic escalation regardless of any underlying Appetitive or Intrinsic justification. The arrangement is characteristically defended by an informational or accountability justification that the observability does not in fact deliver, and the defence is sincerely held, which is what makes the pattern stable rather than merely common. The same conditions operate at population scale: where an act is staged, its Mimetic component is available to every observer, the observers' responses become endogenous evidence for one another, and Coupling Strength within the observing population rises accordingly. The property is a design variable rather than a feature of the subject matter, since the same substantive act may be conducted with or without an audience.
Explanation
High-Theatre is simply high visibility of the process. A private tragedy is made national news. Photographers pursue someone whose only qualification is being known. Politics is conducted as performance rather than as governance. Crimes are reported in detail to millions who were not involved, will never be involved, and can do nothing about them. None of it is required by the thing it attaches to, and the same operation runs at small scale in a leaderboard for ordinary work or a hearing held where colleagues can watch who goes in. The stated reason is that it keeps people informed. That reason is sincerely held and it is wrong: the information changes nothing the viewer can act on, and leaves them worse off for having received it. What the visibility does reliably produce is comparison. Once a process is observable, everyone's position within it can be computed by everyone else, and the contest follows whether or not anyone intended one. Spectacle is the extreme case, not the definition.
