Salience-Status Identity
Canonical definition
The Salience-Status Identity states that Status is Salience carried forward, never annihilated, and re-expressed at population scale: the same Salience an Observer computes over any Object (see the Salience entry) runs between Individuals observing one another value Objects, and the persistent, slow-moving component that survives low-pass filtering across the population over time is Status. Status is therefore not a distinct quantity that Salience causes and leaves behind, nor a separate quantity merely correlated with it, but the same causal contribution conserved through a transformation of scale: Salience is the intra-individual, instantaneous reading; Status is that identical contribution converted, by aggregation across observers and averaging across time, into its population-scale form. Nothing in that conversion reduces the contribution to zero; aggregation and time-averaging change its form and legibility, not its magnitude. The Identity is the scale-bridge underlying the Status Decomposition (Section 8.11): because Status is aggregated Salience, and because the mimetic component of Salience is non-satiating (Salience-Deficit Conflation Principle), the Status-PM component alone exhibits accumulation that never closes while the observers computing it are conscious and perceiving, while Status-A and Status-I inherit the closing dynamics of their sources. Coupling Strength enters the same computation from the belief layer: κ measures the degree to which an Individual's Belief Register, whose templates condition the Salience computation, takes other Individuals' expressed Beliefs as its Evidence, and it sets the gain of the low-pass through which per-dyad valuations condense into Status (Appendix A, Sections A.5.7.3 and A.11.0), which is why Status-formation is coupling-dependent: higher κ passes a larger standing aggregate. The dyadic counterpart of this aggregate, the Mimetic Premium a single observer computes on the observed, stands to Status as instance to aggregate (Status-Premium Duality), by the same conserved-through-transformation relation. Because Status is aggregated Salience and Common-Currency Integration tag-strips incoming Salience signals at the Decision Hub, destroying domain-of-origin information along with source-identity information (Source Opacity), Status-PM accumulated in one field is deployable in any other field where observers process the Individual-as-Object. Cross-field transferability is therefore a downstream consequence of the Identity, not a separate architectural stipulation; it is named the PM Fungibility Principle.
Explanation
The calculation your mind runs to decide whether an apple is worth reaching for is the very same calculation it runs to decide whether another creature is prey, predator, or someone worth copying, one machine, scoring how much anything matters. Now put many people in a room, each running that machine while watching what everyone else treats as mattering. Smooth that out across the whole population and over time (keep only the slow, shared part) and what you are left with is Status: the aggregate of what everyone's Salience machine agrees is worth valuing. Status and Salience are not two independent things that happen to line up; nothing about the aggregating and smoothing makes any of the original contribution disappear along the way. It is one causal contribution, conserved across a change of scale, the way a push travels down a row of dominoes without any of it vanishing at the joins. Salience is the close-up in one head, Status is that same contribution converted into the wide shot across the crowd, never zeroed out, only converted in form. And how much of it survives the smoothing depends on the coupling: how far each person's beliefs are built from what other people express.
