Valence-Neutral Status
Canonical definition
Valence-Neutral Status is the architectural claim that M-return is constituted entirely by other Individuals' social engagement regardless of valence, hatred, fear, and notoriety are M-return subtypes structurally equivalent to admiration, such that the neural status-tracking systems (ventral striatum, anterior cingulate, insula) encode relative rank independent of absolute reward or approval, and negative attention from high-Status sources generates M-return scaled by the Model's Status in the same way positive attention does.
Explanation
The standard assumption that status requires positive regard is not merely incomplete, it is architecturally false. Put simply, being hated by your enemies feels as good as being loved by your friends, both register as "I matter" in the Status-tracking system. The neural systems that evolved to track relative social position did so in environments where any form of sustained social engagement from high-Status others was position-relevant information. The ancestral rival who feared you, the tribal leader who denounced you, the neighbouring group that organised against you, all confirmed your position within the social field. Valence-Neutral Status explains several otherwise puzzling phenomena: why political figures deliberately cultivate opposition from prestigious adversaries (the hatred generates more M-return than indifference), why being beneath notice is a more complete form of Status Death than being despised, and why the "deliberate villain" confabulation, "I tell hard Truths that others hate me for", is so effective at concealing M-pursuit as I-authenticity. The diagnostic that separates genuine I-transgression from M-led negative-attention-seeking is content tracking: I-content tracks the internal logic of the domain; M-negative-attention content tracks whatever generates maximum audience reaction, which changes as the audience habituates. See Gap Behaviour Test, Status. This Individual-level valence neutrality does not imply system-level valence symmetry. While both hatred and admiration generate equivalent PM for the Individual, their effects on the social fabric are radically asymmetric. Admiration reinforces reciprocity norms, tends to track contribution (maintaining Status Integrity), and supports I-function in its targets. Hatred erodes reciprocity, tracks provocation or extraction (degrading Status Integrity), and suppresses I-function in its targets through A-level threat activation. The M-system cannot register this asymmetry because it processes only the scalar "I matter", but the four Crisis State Variables register it clearly. A society where Status is primarily accumulated through negative Salience is a society accelerating through Drift Phase toward Calcification, even though each Individual's M-system reports business as usual. Even micro-aggressions, individually below any intervention threshold, compound through Bayesian updating at population level, feeding agent-based attribution and accelerating Confabulation Cascade convergence. This is why valence neutrality is one of the most dangerous features of the M-system: it makes corrosive interactions feel rewarding to the perpetrator while they eat away at the institutional foundations that maintain Grounded Phase conditions. See Valence Corrosion Asymmetry.
