Academic Camouflage

Canonical definition

**Academic Camouflage is the systematic omission within scholarly frameworks of research questions, variables, and analytical categories that would expose Mimetic Desire's operation, produced not by deliberate concealment but by Confabulation operating on researchers themselves, who select morally comfortable research agendas that avoid implicating humans (including the researchers) as mimetically driven Individuals. Academic Camouflage is Layer 6 of the Camouflage Architecture and a predictable consequence of Confabulation (Layer 2) operating at the institutional level rather than an independent concealment mechanism.

Explanation

Academic Camouflage was initially identified as a standalone concealment layer, but parsimony analysis reveals it as an institutional-level output of the same Confabulation mechanism that operates within individuals. Researchers do not conspire to hide M, they confabulate comfortable research programmes that happen never to examine the computational systems (social comparison, vulnerability assessment, reciprocity networks) implementing both prey-detection and mimetic desire. The selection of research questions that avoid implicating humans as predators, perpetrators, or mimetically driven Individuals is the Confabulation mechanism scaled to academic career incentives. Because Academic Camouflage is generated by Confabulation rather than constituting an independent mechanism, it is listed as Layer 6 of the Camouflage Architecture to mark its institutional location while preserving the distinction from the individual-level Confabulation at Layer 2. See Camouflage Architecture, Confabulation, Disciplinary Priors, Prey Omission. Substrate specification. Academic Camouflage operates as Confabulation (Axiom 4) scaled to institutional incentives, with the same architectural direction-of-drift as individual-scale confabulation: research agendas preferentially complete with A-attributions (legitimate scholarly need, established disciplinary boundaries) and I-attributions (genuine intellectual interest, authentic curiosity) and systematically avoid M-attributions (career-strategic positioning, mimetic alignment with funding consensus, audience-driven topic-selection). The architectural concealment of M operates through researchers’ I-experience of their own work as I-driven; the M-component is precisely what is concealed by Source Opacity at the institutional scale.
