Abstraction Layering

Canonical definition

The iterative process of adding levels of abstraction between participants and Objects, generated by institutions populated by Individuals whose source tags have been destroyed by Decision Hub integration. The structural-environmental analogue of Confabulation, directly entailed by Source Opacity plus Confabulation operating at scale. New layers are added in response to penetration pressure: when an existing layer proves insufficient to sustain Mimetic Premium loading against I-led scrutiny, another layer is added on top, deepening the stack and further attenuating reality-feedback between operational events at the Object and the participant's encounter with the layered architecture. Abstraction Layering is the operational mechanism through which Complexity as Concealment performs its concealment function. The architectural pressure that drives the layering process is continuous and cannot be defeated by simplifying any individual layer; removing one layer produces another in its place because the underlying engine, Source Opacity plus Confabulation, continues to generate the demand for explanatory substrates.

Explanation

Abstraction Layering is the process by which institutions add layer upon layer of mediation between people and the Objects they are trying to engage with. Brains confabulate because integration destroys source tags. Institutions, populated by brains that confabulate, generate layers because participants need explanatory substrates to make sense of what they are valuing, transacting, or being asked to recognise. When one layer is penetrated, another is added on top. The stack grows. Eventually, the stack and the institutional structure surrounding it are deep enough that participants cannot reach the Object except through the layered architecture, and refusal stops being a feasible option. This is why simplification campaigns fail: removing one layer does not stop the process, because the architectural pressure that drives the layering is continuous.
