AIM Framework glossary

Admiration

Canonical definition

Admiration is the Positive Mimesis response to a Model whose observed behaviour, achievement, or qualities expand the observer's I-capacity, demonstrate A-provisioning competence, or contribute to the flourishing of others, producing emulation of the Model's flourishing-enabling qualities rather than competitive pursuit of the Model's comparative position. Admiration operates characteristically through External Mediation and transmits wanting-to-develop-the-quality-observed rather than wanting-what-the-Model-has.

Explanation

Admiration is what you feel when you watch a master craftsperson and want to develop that kind of skill, or when you see someone act with genuine courage and want to be braver yourself. The critical AIM restriction: Admiration applies only to Positive Mimesis, the copying of qualities that expand the observer's I-capacity or strengthen A-provisioning. When people say they "admire" a ruthless dictator's power, a feared figure's capacity for intimidation, or an aggressive competitor's dominance, AIM classifies this not as Admiration but as Mimetic Attraction, status-tracking of high-dominance Models whose comparative position activates social-reward circuits without transmitting any I-expanding or A-enabling content. The distinction matters because Admiration deepens the observer's I-capacity, wanting-to-develop-skill, wanting-to-act-with-courage, wanting-to-learn-the-craft, while status-fascination with feared or hated figures deepens the observer's M-capture, wanting-the-power-position, wanting-the-dominance-signal. Colloquially, "I admire their ruthlessness" is an M-driven response misidentified as Admiration through Confabulation, the Individual has tracked a Model's Status position and confabulated this as respect for a quality. Diagnostic. Does observing the Model make you want to develop a capacity (Admiration) or occupy a position (Mimetic Attraction)? This maps to the audience-removal test: if the desire to emulate the quality persists when no one would ever know you had developed it, the response is Admiration. If the desire evaporates without audience, the response was Mimetic Attraction targeting the Status signal rather than the quality itself. Why hatred cannot ground Admiration. Admiration requires that the transmitted content be flourishing-enabling, expanding I-capacity or A-competence. Qualities grounded in destruction, domination, intimidation, or cruelty do not meet this criterion regardless of how effectively they are exercised. An Individual who experiences heightened valuation of a feared figure's destructive capacity is tracking Status (relative dominance position) not quality (flourishing-enabling competence). The response is Mimetic Attraction operating through External Mediation, not Admiration. The structural test is whether the copied content produces I-expansion in the observer or M-escalation. Hatred-grounded fascination produces M-escalation by definition.
