Bubble-and-Foam Model

Canonical definition

The Bubble-and-Foam Model is the system/social-epistemic construct that pictures the Belief-space as a foam of Belief-domains ("bubbles"), each inflated by the load of Content-Beliefs held within it, each separated from its neighbours by a Boundary-Belief whose strength fixes the cross-domain Coupling Strength. It is at once descriptive and dynamic, and these are one claim rather than two: the structural picture (bubbles inflated by their contents, separated by membranes) and the dynamic behaviour (added Content-Belief load inflates a domain; a fold in one domain relocates its load across the separating Boundary-Belief into adjacent domains; low coupling contains the migration and decohered boundaries transmit it) are the same statement read at rest and in motion. The Model is a construct at the scale of relations among Belief-domains and must not be identified with the Belief Register, which is the intrapersonal store within which one Individual holds Beliefs. The Model makes the relationship among fields of Belief legible and is shown, in Appendix 14A, to have a coherent mathematical structure; it claims nothing deeper than that, and asserts no physical foam.

Explanation

Picture everything a person or a society believes as a mass of soap bubbles. Each bubble is a field (economics, or fashion, or a particular science) and what puffs it up is the weight of the actual claims held inside it. The thin walls between bubbles are Beliefs that say "these two fields are separate, don't mix them up." Strong walls keep a burst in one bubble from spreading; weak walls let it spread. That is the whole picture, and it works in two directions at once: it shows how the fields sit next to each other, and it shows what happens when one bursts, the Beliefs inside do not vanish, they push into the neighbouring bubbles. This is not the same thing as the Belief Register, which is the store of Beliefs inside a single mind; the foam is about how whole fields relate, across and between minds. The maths in Appendix 14A just confirms the picture holds together; it is a tidy way of seeing things, not a claim that Beliefs are literally a foam.

Epistemic status

Framework-Specific Construct. Descriptive-and-dynamic organising model; its mathematical coherence is shown in Appendix 14A.10. Distinct in scale and object from the Belief Register.
