Confabulation Race

Canonical definition

The Confabulation Race is the temporal competition, occurring downstream of integration, between the fast automatic account supplied by Confabulation and the slow deliberate account supplied by the Thinker, to explain a Phenomenal Affect that has already been emitted. Phenomenal Affect and the Common-Currency Scalar are joint products of a single integration event; the Scalar is the action-selection decision variable, while Phenomenal Affect is the concurrently generated felt state that the Thinker must explain. Because Phenomenal Affect is delivered to the Thinker fully formed, and because the source tags were destroyed at integration (Source Opacity Theorem), the Individual is presented with a felt state requiring explanation but no access to its provenance. Confabulation, being automatic and low-cost, ordinarily supplies a plausible cause before the Thinker can construct the accurate one. In an Individual equipped with the correct theory, the accurate account exists but does not arrive faster, so the equipped Individual first receives the confabulated explanation and must then override it by deliberate effort. The direction of the confabulated explanation is set by the loaded prior, not by the affect's true source, and may fall on the self (self-blame), on another (scapegoating), or on circumstance. The confabulation in this race is not an arbitrary fast story. It is the previously held prior, the account with which the loop was last loaded, asserting itself as the default explanation of the present affect. This is why it is the incumbent: it occupies the explanatory slot automatically and at no cost, before deliberation begins, simply by virtue of being already installed. The race is therefore real and asymmetric in the incumbent's favour. The accurate account does not win merely by arriving; it must unseat a Hypothesis already in possession of the field, and unseating it requires effortful I-override that the incumbent never has to expend to maintain its position. The lasting product of a successful override is not only the correction of the present episode but the re-loading of the prior, so that on the next occasion the incumbent occupying the slot is itself more accurate and less override is required. Over repetitions the race is won not by out-running the incumbent but by replacing it. Possession of the correct theory does not prevent the confabulated meaning from forming; it obliges the equipped Individual to strip and replace it after the fact.

Explanation

When something registers as a feeling, you feel it before you know why. Your brain hands you the feeling first and the explanation second. The fastest explanation available is usually whatever you already believed, the story your mind was last loaded with, and it steps in automatically as the "obvious" cause. That makes it the incumbent: it holds the field before you have thought anything through. Which way it points, at yourself, at someone else, or at circumstances, depends on what your loop was already primed to expect, not on what actually caused the feeling. The true account does not show up any quicker, and even when it does, it has to do real work to dislodge the story already sitting there. That effort is the "race." Each time you win it, you also replace the old story with a truer one, so next time the incumbent is closer to correct and easier to overcome. Direction-of-drift specification. (Disaggregation Convention 2.) Where the Race supplies a source-attribution for the present affect, the incumbent explanation preferentially completes as A-attribution or I-attribution and systematically avoids M-attribution; the self / other / circumstance pointer above is the target of blame, not a waiver of that source-direction asymmetry.
