Affective Latency of the Knowledge Patch
Canonical definition
The Affective Latency of the Knowledge Patch is the architectural principle that the Knowledge Patch operates only on the Thinker's processing of a Phenomenal Affect and never on the generation of that affect, because the affect is emitted at integration, upstream of and inaccessible to the Thinker. The Patch cannot reduce the magnitude of an affect once emitted, and cannot eliminate the sting at all. Because the affect's magnitude is set by the prior loaded before the triggering event, the Patch can attenuate that magnitude only prospectively, by installing a more accurate prior that lowers the Salience the Observer assigns to the next Perturbation of the same kind. It acts on two variables across repetitions: it attenuates the magnitude of subsequent affect, and it shortens Decoherence Time (τ), the interval before the true account displaces the confabulated one. The Patch is thus behavioural and prospective, not phenomenological and immediate. It never confers immunity, because the prior can be made more accurate but never perfect; it progressively lowers both the magnitude and the τ of recurring affective episodes through repeated deliberate correction, consistent with M-management rather than M-elimination.
Explanation
The Knowledge Patch cannot stop you feeling the first sting, because the sting is produced before the thinking part of you ever gets involved. What it can do is change what happens next time. Each time you do the hard work of correctly understanding why a certain kind of event affected you, you reload your own mental "loop" with the accurate explanation. So the next time something similar happens, the true account is already sitting there ready, and it takes over faster. It can, over time, make the sting a bit smaller as well as make it fade faster, because an accurate expectation lowers how loudly the event registers, but it can never make the sting disappear. Over many repetitions this is how genuine (hard-won) equanimity is built. Not by feeling nothing, but by feeling less and recovering faster.
Epistemic status
Framework-Specific Principle. Derived from Source Opacity (Axiom 3), the deliberative nature of the Thinker, and the Knowledge Patch's compensatory-pathway character. Canonical treatment in Chapter 18.
