AIM Framework glossary
Contained Rivalry
Canonical definition
Contained Rivalry is rivalry over a Positional Object whose contrast categories stay in Ethical claims, each naming a Referent that can revise it: in a contest of ability the Referent is the result, and in a contest over policy it is the rival's conduct and its Harm. Contained Rivalry stays confined to the Positional Object and the rules under which it is contested, credits a rival's win to the rival's ability, and relaxes on the fast timescale when the contest ends, so that the same rival can be an opponent in the contest and a friend outside it.
Explanation
This is rivalry that stays about the game. You want to beat them, and if they win you put it down to their being better on the day. When the game is over it is over, and you can shake hands and mean it. Sportsmanship is the everyday name for it.
Epistemic status

Derivation
Also in the entry
Distinction from Escaped Rivalry. Contained Rivalry is held about the contest and revised by its results. Escaped Rivalry is held about the rival as a person.
