Escaped Rivalry

Canonical definition

Escaped Rivalry is rivalry whose contrast categories have passed into Essentialist Morality: Self-Model Inversion returns the rival as a cheat, a liar or a danger, a property of character held to be permanent, pervasive and personal, so that the Belief that the rival's gain is the Individual's loss is held about the rival as a person and no longer about the Positional Object. No result bears on a contrast category held as character, so Escaped Rivalry outlasts the contest, charges a rival's win to the rival's character, and is released only slowly, and the rules of the contest no longer bind it.

Explanation

This is rivalry that has stopped being about the game. The other side are no longer opponents who might be better on the day; they are cheats and liars, and when they win it proves it. Because no result can show otherwise, the hostility carries on after the final whistle. It is the shape the scapegoat takes when the target wears the other team's colours.
