Curiosity

Canonical definition

The phenomenological signature of the Thinker's Ground-Resolution function being recruited by an Object the Belief Register cannot already resolve, whether because no committed posterior exists for the Object or because the current context diverges from what the stored posterior predicted. The Object may be one the perceptual field presents or one the Thinker has assembled from the Memory Store and set as a question, so Curiosity requires no exogenous problem: a question the Individual has put to themselves recruits the ground-resolution function on the same terms as one the world has put. Curiosity is not a distinct motivational source, nor a separate drive attached to Intrinsic Motivation. It is what the recruitment of the ground-resolution function feels like from the inside. Because the function is invoked only by the unresolved or the mispredicted, the Thinker is oriented toward exactly those Objects, and that orientation is Curiosity. Engagement is the same function continuing to run as resolution deepens, which is why an Object that sustains unresolved structure sustains engagement, and why the I-process is self-sustaining rather than deficit-terminating. Curiosity stands in complementary relation to Boredom: Curiosity marks the presence of the ground-resolution function's activation condition, Boredom marks its exhaustion.

Explanation

Curiosity is what it feels like when your thinking engine is handed something it has not already worked out. Most of the time the situation is familiar and the system runs on stored conclusions without stopping to think (Habit), so the Thinker is not called in. It is called in only when something is new, does not fit what you expected, or is a question you have put to yourself and not yet answered, and the pull you feel toward it is Curiosity. It is not a separate appetite sitting alongside the desire to eat or the desire to belong. It is simply the sensation of the part of you that resolves things being switched on by something still unresolved. That is also why interest deepens rather than fills up: as long as there is more to work out, the engine keeps running, and it only stops when there is nothing left unresolved in the thing, which is Boredom.
