AIM Framework glossary

Motivational Safety

Canonical definition

Motivational Safety is the condition in which an artificial system’s effective behaviour, across its deployment contexts, does not threaten human Appetitive floors, does not crowd out human Intrinsic domains, and does not function as a high-gain amplifier of destructive human Mimetic dynamics. It is a property of the coupled human-and-artificial system, stated in terms of the three human sources, because the system that has the sources is the human one.

Explanation

An AI is motivationally safe when it neither competes with humans for survival-level goods, nor pushes people into worse status races, nor closes down spaces where intrinsic work and relationships can flourish. This complements alignment at the level of explicit objectives by asking whether the system’s motivational side-effects will erode or support human freedom as AIM defines it.
