Opt-Out Preservation
Canonical definition
Opt-Out Preservation is the institutional design principle ensuring that Individuals retain the capacity to refuse M-participation without forfeiting A-sufficiency or I-access, the fourth dimension of M-Management, such that people can walk away from conflicts, bubbles, polarised theatres, or toxic arenas without losing access to housing, employment, or basic social respect, and the genuine availability of exit options prevents the Opt-Out Paradox from reaching its terminal form (forced mimetic participation as a condition of survival). Refusal is the weaker half of opting out. An Individual who declines the contest but stays among its Models goes on observing them, so Opt-Out Preservation extends to the capacity to leave a Reference Set's observation for an interval long enough for the Reference Set's priors to release, with provisioning maintained through the interval, and that provisioned interval is a legitimate cost of Subcriticality Maintenance.
Explanation
Opt-Out Preservation is the structural complement to the Knowledge Patch: knowing that a dynamic is mimetic is useless if you cannot act on that knowledge without losing your home. The principle requires institutional design that maintains multiple pathways, low-status housing that is genuinely adequate, career tracks that do not require status signalling, social contexts where non-participation is costless. When Opt-Out Preservation holds, the Opt-Out Paradox does not reach its terminal form: recognition of mimetic dynamics gives Individuals actionable options. When it fails, when every pathway to A-sufficiency requires M-participation (the housing market is entirely M-contaminated, every career requires status performance, every social context demands positional display), even Individuals who have acquired the Knowledge Patch and can see the trap remain structurally imprisoned within it. Saying no to the contest is not enough while you are still surrounded by it: you keep seeing what everyone around you values, and those values keep being confirmed. Really opting out of what a group believes means being able to step away from the group for long enough, without losing your income or your home while you are away. Paying for that time helps keep the whole system calm, provided it pays for the time away and not for a prestigious trip.
