Housing Exception Principle
Canonical definition
The Housing Exception Principle is the principle that housing is the universal Mimetic Premium (PM) carrier because it uniquely and simultaneously satisfies genuine Appetitive need (shelter is A-essential), enables I (privacy, space, the conditions of undistracted engagement), and functions as the primary visible wealth signal in most societies, creating a structural condition where Individuals cannot opt out of PM-contaminated markets to meet a non-negotiable A-need, making housing the sector where Concealment Infrastructure is thickest, Price Inflation Ratio is highest, and Exit Capacity is lowest. The satisfaction is continuous rather than episodic, and that is what makes the carrier universal. Most Appetitive goods satiate on consumption and the deficit returns, so the Object is re-acquired on a cycle. Housing does not run that cycle. It satisfies shelter, safety and thermoregulation for as long as it is held, and it supports the Thinker's processes, privacy, space, the conditions of undistracted engagement, on the same terms. An Object satisfying continuously is held rather than consumed, and an Object that is held is observable for the whole time it is held. Episodic goods carry Mimetic Premium while they are being acquired or displayed; housing carries Mimetic Premium without interruption, which is why it is the universal carrier and not merely a large one.
Explanation
Most positional goods are optional, you can refuse to buy a luxury watch without risking A-deprivation. Housing is different: you must have shelter, and in most markets the only available shelter carries an enormous PM (the premium paid for location-as-status-signal, architectural style-as-status-signal, and neighbourhood-as-identity-signal). This means even an Individual with perfect Knowledge Patch awareness, who knows exactly how much of the price is PM, cannot escape paying it without accepting A-deprivation (homelessness or substandard shelter) or radical geographic dislocation (moving to a location where PM is lower but employment and social networks are absent). The Housing Exception Principle explains why housing bubbles recur across all post-appetitive societies despite widespread awareness that prices are "too high": awareness is necessary but insufficient when the object carrying PM is also A-essential.
