Referent Inaccessibility

Canonical definition

Referent Inaccessibility is the Decoherence Regime in which a Referent exists and is causally operative but no access path to it yet exists within the available Hypothesis Space, so Belief in the domain proceeds endogenously despite the Referent's standing existence. Decoherence Time is bounded by the event that opens the access path (characteristically the arrival of an explanatory vocabulary that renders the Referent representable) but the timing of that event is not predictable from within the regime. The paradigm case is gravitation: the Referent existed and governed the motion of bodies throughout history, yet was inaccessible to identification until Newton supplied the vocabulary that rendered it representable, whereupon the domain could be checked against it. The regime is the general form of the development of knowledge over time, of which the recovery of heliocentric structure is a further instance, and of which the identification of Mimetic Desire (real and operative throughout the history of the AIM architecture yet inaccessible under Source Opacity until the mimetic Hypothesis was derived) is the instance this framework concerns. Referent Inaccessibility is distinct from Referent Abandonment: in Inaccessibility the access path never existed until the opening event, whereas in Abandonment the Belief had access and severed it.

Explanation

Sometimes the thing a Belief is about is completely real and has been shaping events all along, but nobody has the concepts needed to see it yet, so whole fields reason as if it weren't there. The Belief can't be corrected against it, not because there's nothing to correct against, but because there's no way to reach it. Then someone builds the missing idea, the Referent becomes reachable, and the old consensus can finally be checked and folded. Gravity is the clearest case: bodies fell and planets orbited exactly as they do now for the whole of history, but until Newton gave people the concept, there was no way to reach that Referent and check Beliefs against it. This is ordinary in the history of knowledge (the planets went round the sun long before Copernicus gave anyone the means to see it) and Mimetic Desire is the instance this framework is about: real for as long as there have been humans, invisible until now.
