Relational Inference Principle
Canonical definition
The principle that when the relational Object instantiating a relation between Individuals, or between an Individual and another Object, is not directly observable, the Decision Hub constructs the relational Object by inference from observable configurations of the relata, combining behavioural cues, symbolic markers, and contextual norms, such that the inferred relational Object then enters the valuation architecture through the same A, I, PM decomposition that applies to directly observed Objects.
Explanation
Some relations you can see directly. If two balls are connected by a piece of string, the string is the connection, it is the relation between the balls, and you observe it in the same way you observe the balls themselves. Human relationships are not like that. A marriage is not a physical string you can point to. What you see instead is a configuration, two people in a loving embrace, both wearing wedding rings, sharing a household, introducing each other as spouse. From that configuration you infer the relational Object, their marriage, and from that moment your brain values the marriage as a thing in its own right, just as it would value a directly observed Object. This is why people readily say "they have a good marriage" or "their marriage is in trouble", they are reporting the value their Decision Hub has assigned to the inferred relational Object, not a shorthand description of the two Individuals separately. The same inference mechanism operates for friendships (inferred from shared time, mutual aid, signs of trust), partnerships (inferred from joint projects, shared decision-making, formal agreements), rivalries (inferred from competitive displays, symmetric escalation, reciprocal hostility), and alliances (inferred from coordinated action, mutual endorsement, shared enemies). Mirror-neuron systems catch the goal-directed configuration preconsciously within the Transmission Window (60 to 340 ms), and mentalising networks elaborate the inferred relational category consciously from approximately 300 to 500 ms onward. The inference step is an access mechanism, not a change in Object-status, once the inferred relational Object is constructed, it is processed by the Decision Hub exactly as if it had been directly observed.
