Relationalism

Canonical definition

Relationalism is the ontological and methodological position, derived from the Relational Constitution Principle, that social theory must treat the relationally constituted Individual (rather than the autonomous Individual of Individualism) as its foundational unit. Relationalism holds that because mimetic transmission is preconscious (Axiom 7), source-opaque (Axiom 3), and reciprocally co-determining (Entanglement), any framework that begins from the autonomous Individual systematically misattributes coupled phenomena as autonomous ones and cannot recover explanatory adequacy without incorporating the relational constitution of desire, Belief, and identity. Relationalism contrasts with Individualism not by denying the Individual's physical independence or architectural separateness, but by denying that these properties entail explanatory autonomy. Critically, Relationalism is an empirically grounded position: the relational constitution it describes is measured in milliseconds of neural activation, demonstrated through observability-manipulation experiments, and manifested in the chronic empirical failure to separate homophily from contagion in observational data (the Reflection Problem), which AIM reframes not as a measurement failure but as an accurate observation of how desire actually works.

Explanation

Individualism says society is built from autonomous individuals whose preferences, choices, and identities are their own. Relationalism says the same physically independent individuals exist, but their inner lives (what they want, who they think they are, what they believe is true) are so deeply shaped by other people that treating them as self-contained units produces systematic errors in every field that tries it: economics, psychology, law, political philosophy. This is not an ideological preference for collectivism over individualism, and it is not a philosophical stance about the metaphysics of personhood. It is what the empirical evidence requires. Mirror neurons fire before consciousness arrives. The Decision Hub integrates mimetic inputs and destroys the source tags. Confabulation fills in a story of autonomous choice. The Reflection Problem persists not because our instruments are bad but because desire genuinely is relationally constituted. You do not stop being a separate person under Relationalism. You stop being a self-explanatory one, and you stop for empirical reasons, not philosophical ones. Falsification Conditions: Would be falsified if the Relational Constitution Principle is falsified on any of its five empirical premises, or if methodological individualism demonstrably produces equivalent or superior explanatory and predictive adequacy to relational models across domains where AIM predicts systematic individualist failure (peer effects research, positional goods markets, mimetic crisis dynamics, status-driven consumption).
