Rung Loss
Canonical definition
Rung Loss is the event in which an Individual's holding falls below a comparison set that does not fall with it. A loss event removes a holding or vacates an occupancy at once; standing, the time-average of other Individuals' valuations, falls slowly; coupling to the Models of the lost rung follows standing rather than holding; and the comparison set, a Thinker prior read through the Belief Register, is revised only by repeated Ground-Resolution cycles. The Reference-Set Reset carries no negative term, so the loss separates the Individual from the rung and the rung stays where the ratchet left it. The ratchet is built to move in one direction, and the upward press of Axiom 6 continues to act after the fall, so the pressure is directed toward the rung while the Individual moves away from it. Two readings follow: Mimetic Desire for the lost Object rises, as wanting without possession sharpened by the loss, and the Observer's reading of the Individual's own position against the cached comparison set is negative and, among conspecifics, carries the sign of a reading against a predator. Both reach the Decision Hub as deficit, and neither has a consumption or repair that ends it.
Explanation
What is lost in Rung Loss is status: the standing that other people's valuations gave you, the rung you occupied in their eyes, and with it the regard, the deference and the place in the group that came with the job, the marriage, the title or the reputation. The machinery that tracks status was built for one direction of travel. Every gain clicks it up a rung and it never clicks back, because in the ancestral group holding your place was what kept you alive. So when you fall, the machinery does not come down with you. It keeps pressing upward, toward the rung you held, while you are moving down, and the harder the fall, the further apart the push and the movement are. The yardstick your mind measures you against stays at the old height: the people you compared yourself with, the life you expected, the respect you were used to. Measured against it you read as below where you belong, and that reading is felt the way the body feels danger, because to the same machinery a creature that has lost its place in the group reads as prey. You also go on wanting what you lost, more sharply than before. Nothing you can eat, fix or do with your body switches this off, because nothing in the body is wrong.
Epistemic status
Framework-Specific Result. Derived from Axiom 6, the Reference-Set Reset, the Signed Valuation Principle and the Observer's reading of the Belief Register (Chapter 4, Sections 4.4.0, 4.4.7, 4.4.8). The negative-signed limb rests on the Signed Valuation Principle and, at the fast layer, on the Signed-Input Stability Corollary (Appendix A, Section A.5); the case of a coupling changing sign remains the specialist task named at Chapter 4, Section 4.4.0.
