Status Death
Canonical definition
Status Death is the persistent gap, following Rung Loss or a gradual decline in standing, between the Individual's holding and a comparison set the Belief Register continues to carry, read by the Observer with the sign of a reading against a predator, felt under Phenomenological Collapse as injury to the body, and kept live by repeated ground-resolution against an explanandum no consumption or repair can close and by recall that re-enters the loss as fresh evidence. It is a state, not an event, and it is recognised in one of two ways. Where the fall is sudden, recognition is contemporaneous with it: the Individual registers the loss as it happens, and ground-resolution characteristically completes the reading as the destruction of the self, that being the account the reading's shape offers first. Where standing has declined gradually, or notice has been withdrawn over a long isolation, the decline is read as drift and recognition comes later, detached from any event of comparable size, when a small encounter makes the accumulated gap visible at once and the Hypothesis of recovery is lost. Its limit is being beneath notice. The same structure at the scale of the Belief Registers of a population is the Status Death of a collective.
Explanation
Status Death is what it feels like to have lost your status and to go on being measured against where you were. It is recognised in one of two ways. Sometimes there is a fall you can name, the dismissal, the exposure, the divorce, and you know it the moment it happens: in that moment the mind tells you that you are finished, because a signal shaped like being caught by a predator can only be explained as being destroyed. Sometimes there is no single fall at all, only a long slide or a long loneliness that never registers day by day, until one small event makes the whole of it visible at once, and you realise you no longer matter to anyone and see no way back. Both moments are dangerous. Being hated is not the worst of it; being unnoticed is, because even hatred tells you that you still count.
Epistemic status
Framework-Specific Construct. Derived from Axioms 3, 4, 6 and 8 and Chapter 4, Sections 4.4.3, 4.4.7 and 4.4.8, with the loss limb formal at Appendix A, Section A.9.6. That Status Death with an inward attribution is a route to suicide is a Framework-Specific Hypothesis (Chapter 16, Section 16.12).
Derivation
