Calcification Threshold

Canonical definition

The Calcification Threshold is the point in a field's development at which the mimetic component of Status becomes as predictive of an Individual's position as the two Referent-backed components together, above which the rational allocation of effort moves from contribution to extraction. Status-A is bounded by the observers' actual Appetitive deficits and satiates at population level once the functional need is met; Status-I is bounded by reach, each observer's I-valuation tracking an enrichment that observer actually received, so the total is tethered to the number of Individuals the contribution genuinely touches; Status-PM alone has no bound of its own: each observer's Mimetic Premium is raised by the Premium other observers already direct at the same Individual, so the component recruits its own increase, and the only ceiling on it is the attention those observers can supply (Appendix A, Section A.5.7.4). Both Referent-backed components raise rank and both terminate, on different conditions. Beyond both ceilings the only component still capable of moving an Individual's position is the one that has none, and an Individual optimising for rank reallocates accordingly.

Explanation

Early in a field's life the way to rise is to be good at the thing. The needs are unmet, the work has not reached everyone it could reach, and doing more of it moves you. Later both of those run out. The needs are met, and the people your work can reach have been reached, so the same work offered again enriches nobody new. What has not run out is position itself, because position feeds on position. So the reliable route to standing stops being what you contribute and starts being what you already hold, and the hierarchy hardens into an arrangement that no longer tracks what anyone supplies. The cruelty of it is that contribution never stops being valued, which is why nobody inside can tell the ceiling from a change in the rules.
