Camouflage Architecture
Canonical definition
**Camouflage Architecture is the eight-layer concealment structure whereby Mimetic Desire is rendered systematically invisible at individual, institutional, and civilisational levels: Source Opacity (Layer 1), Confabulation (Layer 2), and Object Parasitism (Layer 3), collectively the Triple Camouflage; Disciplinary Priors (Layer 4), Disciplinary Boundaries (Layer 5), and Academic Camouflage (Layer 6); Vocabulary Gap / Hilbert Collapse (Layer 7); and Meta-Architectural Exclusion (Layer 8). Each successive layer conceals not only M but also the operation of lower layers, and penetrating any single layer reveals at most the one beneath; only simultaneous penetration of all eight exposes the full structure. *Framework-Specific Construct. Formalised in Chapter 8.***
Explanation
The Camouflage Architecture explains why Mimetic Desire was never identified despite its effects being exhaustively documented across every culture and epoch. The eight layers operate across three tiers: Tier 1, Individual (Layers 1–3: Triple Camouflage). Source Opacity blocks introspective detection (source-tags discarded at integration). Confabulation actively generates false A/I explanations for M-driven desires. Object Parasitism ensures M operates exclusively through A-objects and I-objects, so no purely M-object exists to reveal M's operation. Tier 2, Institutional (Layers 4–6). Disciplinary Priors are the foundational assumptions within each academic field that independently block recognition of M (economics assumes preference exogeneity; psychology assumes introspective reliability; philosophy assumes autonomous selfhood). Disciplinary Boundaries prevent cross-field synthesis because the question "which of my desires are authentically mine?" falls between every established discipline. Academic Camouflage is the Confabulation mechanism operating on researchers, producing systematic omission of M-relevant research questions. Tier 3, Civilisational (Layers 7–8). The Vocabulary Gap (Hilbert Collapse) is the absence of conceptual categories required even to formulate the M-Hypothesis (the explanatory framework's Hilbert space lacks the basis vector corresponding to "preconscious mimetic transmission as a motivational source." Meta-Architectural Exclusion is the absence of the Hypothesis-type "a structural feature of cognition might systematically prevent its own discovery") the possibility that the architecture could be self-concealing sits outside civilisation's epistemic space. The earlier Triple Camouflage formulation (Layers 1–3 only) predates the full formalisation and remains valid as a label for the individual-level tier. The canonical reference for the complete eight-layer structure is Chapter 8.
