Certainty-Truth Independence
Canonical definition
Certainty-Truth Independence is the principle within Quantum Epistemology that Bayes' theorem functions as a movement function specifying how evidence should shift probability mass, not a Truth function specifying correspondence with reality, such that P(H\|E) → 1 describes the system reaching maximal probability concentration, not the Hypothesis being true, and the distinction between probability concentration (a system property) and truth-correspondence (a relation to reality) is the foundation of the framework's analysis of coupled Belief dynamics.
Explanation
Bayes' theorem contains a prior, a likelihood, a normalising term, and a posterior. It does not contain a variable for Truth, a correspondence function between H and reality, or any mechanism for determining whether H is actually the case. When every input to the equation is either internal to the Belief system (the prior) or generated by other Belief systems (the evidence, in coupled settings), the output, the posterior, inherits this closure. Bayesian updating in coupled systems is a transformation of the Belief system by the Belief system. Truth, being external, enters only through priors grounded in direct observation and through eventual collision with reality (decoherence). In high-coupling-strength systems where Beliefs circulate and amplify without Truth entering the loop, Individuals become maximally certain without becoming more correct. The phenomenology of convergence, the mounting evidence, the decreasing plausibility of alternatives, the growing conviction, is identical regardless of whether the Hypothesis is true. The Individual cannot distinguish "I am converging toward Truth" from "I am converging toward a stable Belief-state that may or may not correspond to Truth."
