Truth-Value Orthogonality

Canonical definition

Truth-Value Orthogonality is a property within Quantum Epistemology whereby the truth-value of a Belief (whether it corresponds to reality) and the certainty-value of a Belief (how strongly it is held) occupy orthogonal dimensions in the Belief state space, such that certainty provides zero information about Truth, and increasing certainty through social consensus or Confabulation compounding does not move the Belief toward Truth but merely collapses it onto a single basis vector, eliminating doubt without improving accuracy.

Explanation

In everyday reasoning, feeling certain about something is treated as evidence that it is true. Truth-Value Orthogonality says this inference is architecturally invalid: certainty and Truth are independent dimensions, like north-south and east-west on a map. Moving north (becoming more certain) tells you nothing about whether you have moved east (become more accurate). This is why entire populations can converge on shared Beliefs with maximal certainty that are completely false, the Confabulation Cascade drives certainty toward 100% through a self-reinforcing loop of endogenous evidence (each person's expressed certainty becomes evidence for the next person's updating), and this convergence proceeds identically regardless of whether the Belief is true or false. This also means that within the time-horizon of social interaction, conflict dynamics are identical regardless of which party holds True Beliefs, being correct provides no epistemic advantage within coupled dynamics. The Individual who is right and the Individual who is wrong receive the same type of evidence: observations of the other's certainty. Neither receives direct evidence of truth-value. Reality eventually intrudes (decoherence), but in social domains this can take years, decades, or generations. Truth-Value Orthogonality does not claim Truth is irrelevant, it claims Truth operates on a different timescale than certainty, and the two can diverge for extended and catastrophic periods.
