Collective Convergence Mechanism
Canonical definition
The Collective Convergence Mechanism is the process by which Individual Confabulation Cascades synchronise through social proof, public expression of confabulated narratives, prestige-biased learning, and mimetic template transmission, producing population-level Belief shifts that accelerate rather than correct the underlying error, because each Individual's expressed narrative becomes evidence in others' updating cycles, creating coupled oscillator dynamics where convergence on shared false Beliefs compounds faster than any Individual's private doubt can resist.
Explanation
The Collective Convergence Mechanism explains how private self-deception becomes public consensus. Individual A confabulates a narrative and expresses it. Individual B, performing their own Bayesian updating, incorporates A's expressed narrative as social evidence, it updates B's prior toward the same conclusion. B then expresses a similar narrative, which updates C and D and also reinforces A's prior (social proof). The result is a positive feedback loop where each person's confabulation validates everyone else's, producing population-level convergence on a shared but false Belief at a rate that increases with network connectivity and decreases with Epistemic Suspension capacity. This is the mechanism by which societies arrive at shared scapegoats, shared market manias, and shared political delusions, not through conspiracy or coordination, but through the ordinary operation of Bayesian updating on socially expressed confabulations. The Collective Convergence Mechanism is the population-scale form of the Bayesian compounding dynamic. Its intrapersonal counterpart is the Individual Confabulation Cascade; its inter-personal network-propagation counterpart is the Confabulation Cascade. Collective Convergence is the emergent result of many Confabulation Cascades synchronising via propagation pathways across the population.
