AIM Framework glossary
Duty
Canonical definition
A duty, in the framework's terms, is the correlative of a Right: the obligation, falling on whoever is best placed to discharge it, to secure the protected condition a Right names and to refrain from using control of that condition as leverage. Duties are distributed by a cascading structure rather than held uniformly, and like Rights they are derived rather than granted.
Explanation
Every Right names a condition whose absence would coerce, and a Duty answers the question of who must see to it. The answer is never "society in general", which is an address no obligation ever reaches. It is the nearest party with the capacity to act, and where that party cannot or will not, the obligation passes outward to the next. The three source-specific duties follow from the three source-specific rights: A-Duties from A-Rights, I-Duties from I-Rights, M-Duties from M-Rights. Each has a positive limb, secure the condition, and a negative limb, do not use control of it as leverage.
