Incidental Buffer Principle

Canonical definition

The named result (formal locus Appendix A.5.3, as a corollary to the Saddle-Node Default) that, because the AIM architecture supplies no restoring force against Mimetic Premium compounding, every measure that has ever damped a mimetic cascade in the historical record has been (a) external in origin, whether an Institutional Buffer added outside the loop or a prior-adjusting internal correction applied from outside the Individual, (b) incidental, never engineered against the M-loop because the loop had not been identified under the Camouflage Architecture, and instead indexed to a culture's Confabulated model of its own disorder, and (c) variable in strength across time and culture, drifting with the Confabulated rationale that sustains it rather than with the architectural quantity it damps. The principle spans two damping sites: external institutional buffering, which requires a fourth node with intrinsic negative feedback to convert the Fold, and internal damping by the Knowledge Patch, which attenuates the effective loop gain from within but cannot convert the Fold and is therefore insufficient alone. Neither site is sufficient on its own; they are complementary, and both have been unavailable in architecture-targeted form for the whole of the historical record.

Explanation

Human societies have always had things that slow a mimetic blow-up down, courts, a free press, divided power, and at the individual level habits of self-restraint. But none of these were ever designed to stop the actual mechanism, because nobody knew the mechanism was there. They were built to fit each culture's own story about what was going wrong, so they only ever dampen the real problem by accident, and their strength rises and falls with the story rather than with the danger. The Knowledge Patch helps from the inside by changing how a person reads their own wanting, but on its own the Knowledge Patch only softens the build-up and cannot guarantee the crash is avoided. Stopping the crash reliably needs a purpose-built institution doing the job from outside, working together with the Patch inside.
