Referent Blindness

Canonical definition

Referent Blindness is the property of a structure that selects or transmits Belief while carrying no internal variable for which condition of the Hardness–Referent Matrix's Referent-governance axis the Belief it circulates stands in, and which therefore treats all four alike: a live Referent governing; a Referent identified and its verdict defied; no Referent ever identified; and no Referent constitutively available. The property is inherited from Content-Agnosticism, the corresponding property of Belief updating under Axiom 8 (Bayesian Belief Dynamics), and the inheritance carries a change in status. At the scale of the Individual the blindness is architecturally unavoidable, the Decision Hub offering nowhere to place such a variable, which is why the corrective is the Knowledge Patch's supplied vocabulary rather than a repair to the mechanism. At the scale of a structure deciding what an Individual sees, the blindness is a design choice, since nothing prevents such a structure from carrying a reading of the Referent condition of what it circulates. Derived at Chapter 20, Section 20.4.2. Distinction from Content-Agnosticism. Content-Agnosticism is the property of the updating mechanism inside one Individual, and it concerns subject matter: the mechanism carries no variable for the Truth, moral value or crisis-potential of what it processes. Referent Blindness is the property of a structure between Individuals, and it concerns Referent condition: the structure carries no variable for whether a governing fact stands behind what it circulates, has been defied, was never sought, or does not exist. The first is a fact about a Decision Hub and cannot be otherwise. The second is a fact about something built and can. Distinction from the Referent Absence Property. The Referent Absence Property concerns whether an external ground-truth exists at all for an item of self-content, and answers that for evaluative identity-Content none does. Referent Blindness concerns whether a structure can tell that question's answer apart from the three others, and is silent on which answer is correct in any case. A Referent-blind arrangement circulating genuinely Referent-absent content does no harm by doing so, and the same arrangement circulating a Belief whose Referent has already returned its verdict propagates Referent Abandonment at scale.

Explanation

Some of what circulates is about things the world can settle, some is about things the world has already settled and is being contradicted anyway, some is about things nobody has ever checked, and some is about taste, where there is nothing to check. These are four different situations needing four different responses. A system that ranks and forwards what people see makes no distinction between them: it moves all four the same way, because nothing in it is keeping track of which is which. That is Referent Blindness. In one person's head, the same indifference is unavoidable and the framework works around it. In a machine built to decide what millions of people see, it is something someone chose, and it could have been chosen otherwise.
