Revenge Overdetermination

Canonical definition

The result that the revenge impulse is the overdetermined joint output of four mechanisms the framework already establishes, fused by Source Opacity into a single imperative the Individual experiences as self-authored moral duty. The four drivers are (1) a Self-Model perturbation, the contradicting evidence delivered by the wrong, which defaults to anomaly-processing demanding closure, with the magnitude of the perturbation setting the magnitude of the demand (2) Agent-Based Causal Default attribution (Axiom 9), which routes the perturbation to an agent, correct at the level of proximate cause in the killing case and frictionless for that reason (3) a non-satiating position-restoration drive (Axiom 6), which seeks to lower or remove the agent and, where the loss is irreversible, finds no act that closes the deficit, so the drive pushes past redress toward elimination and (4) a loaded loop, the avenger-agent interface whose loop gain is carried above its critical value by high Coupling Strength and maximal Salience, so the wrong functions as the perturbation that tips it super-critical and the impulse compounds rather than decaying. The limiting case is the murder of a loved one, in which the lost Individual was a load-bearing node of the avenger's relationally constituted Self-Model, driving all four drivers to their ceilings; the same structure scales down through grave non-fatal wrongs to ordinary personal slights, with the interface's loop gain determining whether a given slight decays or escalates into a feud. Confabulation under Source Opacity (Axioms 3 and 4) resolves the fused signal as maximal-grade moral ground, so the impulse presents as sacred duty. The result carries a normative corollary, and the corollary is that the explanatory completeness of the account is a warning rather than a licence: the impulse is a failure mode of the architecture, not a moral authority, and the force with which it presents as sacred duty is the symptom by which the failure mode is recognised, not evidence of its rightness. Because the impulse demands the agent's elimination with maximal force precisely when the loss is greatest, and because acting on it loads the loop further, writes fresh Trauma into the agent's field, and propagates the very perturbation the wrong began through the Revenge Cascade, it cannot be treated as acceptable in any circumstances; it is to be understood as a failure mode, engineered around by institutional design that holds the loop sub-critical, and resisted by the Individual in whom it arises. The debt to society the impulse invokes is confabulated, while the real obligation runs to the deformed field and is discharged by Cascading Support and Cascading Consequences, so that the perturbation is absorbed by the field rather than amplified through it.

Explanation

Revenge feels like one overwhelming thing, a sacred duty to set right what was done, but architecturally it is several things at once that the brain cannot tell apart. A wrong from someone shakes your sense of who you are, your brain pins the blame on the person who did it, the status part of you wants to pull that person down to undo the damage, and because you and they are locked in a tight, attention-saturated relationship, the whole thing feeds back on itself and grows instead of fading. All four arrive blended into one signal you cannot unpick, so it presents as pure righteous purpose. The clearest case is the murder of someone you love, because that person was part of how you understood yourself, so every driver is maxed out, and since the loss can never be undone, nothing short of destroying the killer feels like enough. The same machinery, turned down low, powers an office grudge or a family feud over a slight nobody can even remember; the only difference is how hard the wrong hit and how tightly wound the relationship already was. The sting in the tail is that the feeling, however real, is not a reliable guide to what is owed. What a serious wrong actually requires is repairing everyone it damaged, the victim's circle first and the wrongdoer's circle too, not destroying the person the impulse points at, which only spreads the damage further.
