Self-Model Perturbation

Canonical definition

The Bayesian evidence event that occurs when an Individual encounters another Individual whose observable characteristics deviate from the culturally constituted encoding of "normal" within the first Individual's Self-Model. The encounter constitutes evidence that the prior P(H_normal) is parochial rather than universal. The architecture defaults to processing this evidence as anomaly (Option B: low-status assignment and PM extraction) rather than revision (Option A: Self-Model update), for four converging reasons: prior dominance, the Prior Examination Inversion, the Agent-Based Causal Default (Axiom 9), and the extractive incentive produced by the resulting PM-differential. Axiom-Derived Principle. Derived from Axiom 2, Axiom 3, Axiom 4, Axiom 6, Axiom 8, and Axiom 9.

Explanation

When you meet someone who is visibly different from what you grew up with, your brain registers this as evidence that your idea of "normal" might not be universal. But your idea of "normal" has been reinforced by tens of thousands of recalled memories across your entire life. Worse, the very framework you use to interpret the encounter is built from that prior. On top of this, treating the different person as "less than normal" produces a real, ongoing benefit: you extract attention, deference, and positional advantage from every subsequent interaction. The architecture defaults to this extractive response not because you are a bad person but because the updating arithmetic, the interpretive framing, the causal attribution system, and the material incentive all converge on the same output.

Distinction from Self-Model Disruption and Self-Model Inversion. Self-Model Perturbation is triggered by encounter with a culturally non-normative Individual, evidence that the prior P(H_normal) is parochial. Self-Model Disruption is triggered by loss of conditions sustaining an existing source-specific valuation (a job, a reference group, a vocation). Self-Model Inversion is the upstream generative mechanism by which the Self-Model produces the contrast categories deployed in the default extractive response to Perturbation.
