Structural Determination Principle (SDP)
Canonical definition
The Structural Determination Principle (SDP) states that what an arrangement produces is fixed by its structure, and that the Content carried through the arrangement and the intentions of the Individuals who fill it bear on the output only by setting structural parameters. The mechanisms the architecture runs carry no term indexed on what a Belief is about, on which group fills a scapegoat slot, on what an arrangement is called, on the event that sets a discharge off, or on the state of mind of the Individual who acts. Changing which Content fills a slot, with every parameter that Content sets held fixed, leaves the output unchanged; changing a structural parameter with the Content held fixed changes the output.
Explanation
The machinery that turns beliefs into action does not look at what the beliefs are about or at what anyone meant. It responds to things like how tightly people's beliefs are tied to one another, how quickly reality gets a say, whether people's needs are met, and who holds power. Content still matters, but only by changing one of those things: an idea that lets people see what is driving them changes how easily they are swept along, and a rule that explains what it protects is kept for a reason people can check. Where reality corrects a belief quickly, what is true decides where people end up. Where reality is slow, what everyone else says decides it, and then the content of the belief makes no difference to the path a crisis takes. The same goes for intent. Nobody can see from the inside why they did what they did, and nobody else can see it either, so what anyone says or concludes about intent is part of the content. What reaches the outcome is what was done and the conditions that produced it, and that is what a response has to work on. What the Structural Determination Principle integrates. The Structural Determination Principle is the single statement of four narrower results. Content-Agnosticism supplies the first: Bayesian updating carries no variable for what a Hypothesis is about or for how a prior entered. Content-Trajectory Independence supplies the second: the velocity, convergence and fixed point of a cascade are set by structural parameters and not by which Content fills the Hypothesis slot, so a crisis recurs where its structural conditions persist, whatever Content the next episode carries. Both hold where Decoherence Time is long relative to cascade velocity, so that expressed Belief rather than a Referent is the dominant Evidence; where a live Referent is in contact, convergence is the Referent's work and tracks Truth (the Belief Multipolarity Principle). The third concerns intent. Integration destroys the source decomposition of a valuation, so an Individual's account of why an act was aimed where it was is a Confabulation and an observer's inference about it is a Projection, and what anyone says or infers of intent is Content. The interventions that reach an act work identically whether the Individual behind the act is sincere or cynical, malice is the uncommon case (the Non-Malice Corollary), the self-defence Belief held on every side cancels (the Self-Defence Orthogonality Principle), and what prevention needs to know about an Individual is carried by the upstream conditions and the pattern of conduct. The mental element grades culpability, and culpability does work only for punishment. The fourth concerns harm. Harm is fixed by what an act does to the motivational system of the Individual who receives it; what the Individual harmed takes the act to have meant is that Individual's own estimate of the offender, read from the offender's conduct and entered as Evidence, so that, given the conduct received and read, the Harm is independent of the offender's actual state of mind. Content changes the output by changing a parameter: Content that enters a Hypothesis Space, opens an Intrinsic domain or carries its Referent changes the parameters the dynamics run on, which is how the Knowledge Patch, supplied as vocabulary, operates as a structural intervention (the Content-Channel Asymmetry). The Structural Output Principle is the instance of the Structural Determination Principle for criminal proceedings, the Trigger-Indifference Corollary the instance at the apex, and the Self-Defence Orthogonality Principle the instance for aggression and violence at every scale.
