Entertainment

Canonical definition

Entertainment is the reception relation between an Individual and an Object holding under two joint conditions. First, the Individual occupies the reception position rather than the production position with respect to the Object in the sense of the Salience-Emission Asymmetry: the Object's content reaches the Individual's Observer as read field content, rather than either constituting the Individual's own executed action or being engaged as a constituent step in an output the Individual will themselves emit. Second, the Object performs no A-repair, so that the valuation it draws is composed of I-engagement and Mimetic reception alone; an Object that simulates A-signal without any deficit being present or repaired satisfies this condition, because the simulation is received content rather than deficit-repair. Where both hold, the Object supplies the Thinker with unresolved structure, which is the activation condition of Ground-Resolution and whose felt signature is Curiosity, and supplies the Observer with Salient content in which the Individual's own comparative position is not at stake. Neither channel requires that the content be agent-based or that it arrive by any particular modality: the Observer's baseline function is the reading of a field and the attachment of signed Salience to the Objects in it, of which the reading of other agents' valuations is the special case, and the Thinker's activation condition is unresolved structure of any kind. An Object may therefore stand in the Entertainment relation through perceived non-agent content, as a piece of music does through harmonic and rhythmic structure; through perceived agent content, as a drama or a contest does; or through content the Thinker constructs, as narrative does, where the perceptual input is symbolic and the Objects engaged, agents among them, are assembled by the generative operation from that input together with the Memory Store and carried at whatever posterior Ground-Resolution assigns them, which for constructed content is not bounded away from Belief. In the constructed case the relation is bounded by the Memory Store on the same terms Imagination is: a narrative whose constituents the Individual cannot assemble is unavailable to them rather than merely difficult. Entertainment is a relation and not a class of Objects: under the Object-Source Non-Identity Principle no Object carries a fixed source-composition, so the same Object stands in the Entertainment relation to one Individual and not to another, and to the same Individual at one time and not at another.

Explanation

Entertainment is what happens when something is made for you rather than by you, and it is not feeding you or keeping you warm. Two things then happen at once. The thinking part gets something to work out, what happens next, where the tune is going, how the trick was done, whether the team holds on, and that is the pull you feel as interest. The watching part gets a field to read, and it reads whatever is there: a piece of music moving through time, a landscape, a game turning, people wanting things and getting them or losing them. What it never gets is you. You are not in the field it is reading, so none of what it reads costs you anything positionally. That combination is the whole of it, and it is why a play is entertainment for the people in the seats and a night's work for the people on the stage. It is not a fact about the play. It is a fact about which side of it you are on. Emission and the Observer's load. The condition is directional. Where an Individual's engagement with an Object is organised by an output they will themselves emit, the priors on which the Observer conditions its assessment are weighted toward the field that will receive that output, and under the Observer-Quiescence Corollary that weighting operates upstream of the generative step, narrowing the amplitude assigned to candidate Hypotheses before Ground-Resolution acts on any of them. The Individual then engages the Object through a pre-filter set by an audience of their own rather than receiving its content. Compensation is a reliable marker of this condition rather than the condition itself, since an Individual is paid for what they emit: payment received for an engagement is strong evidence that an anticipated emission is organising it. The marker is evidence and not definition, which is why the unpaid performer and the unpaid critic both stand outside the relation while the Individual who pays for a ticket stands inside it. The performer case. An Individual performing is not entertained by their own performance, and this holds however much they enjoy the work. The enjoyment may be entirely genuine I-engagement (Chapter 7, Section 7.7.2), but I-engagement and Entertainment are not the same relation and neither entails the other. The performer's own action is the Object's content, so their Observer receives it as reafference through the responses of others rather than as observation of a field they stand outside; the first condition fails on position, independently of whether an anticipated emission is also organising the engagement. The same Individual encountering the completed work later, outside the production position, satisfies both conditions and is entertained by it. Where the work carries the Individual as an Individual-as-Object, the relation is attenuated in proportion to how heavily the self-as-observed-agent channel is loaded, since under the Observer-Quiescence Corollary that load crowds the Thinker's engagement with the unresolved structure the Object supplies. The performer who cannot receive their own work without attending only to their own faults is that crowding at its maximum. Distinction from Fun and Flow. Fun is the phenomenology of active I-engagement and Flow is the low-crowding limit of Observer-driven crowding-out; both describe the Individual's internal state during an engagement of any kind, and both are available to the performer. Entertainment describes the Individual's position relative to an Object and is not available to the performer with respect to their own performance. The contrast with Flow is sharpest at the Observer: Flow is the state in which the Observer is quiet, while in Entertainment the Observer is fully occupied, occupied by the content the Object supplies rather than by the Individual's own comparative position. The two are opposite settings of one dial rather than neighbouring states. An Individual may be entertained without Fun, as when a work is followed attentively and found poor, and may have Fun without being entertained, as in any engaged production. The terms answer different questions: Fun and Flow answer what this is like, Entertainment answers which side of it the Individual is on.
