AIM Framework glossary
Humour
Canonical definition
Humour is Fun in which the open question closes in the episode that opens it: evidence the Individual's expected reading of an Object cannot accommodate, resolved by the Individual's own Imagination into a reading that fits everything already encountered, the evidence that set up the expectation included, where the integrated valuation of the resolved Object is positive. The resolution occurs in the Thinker's reading of the Object and does not revise the Belief Register. Whether the episode is felt as Humour is decided by the sign of the integrated valuation, to which the Body Manager and the Observer contribute whatever the Object carries apart from the joke, and Source Opacity leaves the Individual unable to tell which contribution decided it.
Explanation
A joke leads you to expect one thing and then immediately subverts those expectations by providing a completely different explanation from the same information presented in the joke. Whether that feels funny depends on what else the content carries: a joke about something that genuinely threatens you, or that lowers you, does not land however clever it is. A joke you have heard before has no surprise left in it, but the next joke of the same kind can still work.
