AIM Framework glossary
Terminal Phase
Canonical definition
The Terminal Phase is the final phase of the Crisis State Architecture, in which restrictions on a scapegoated group escalate to violence. The Collective Fixed Point has been reached, Grievance Belief in the group's guilt having approached certainty; Coupling Strength is at its maximum and Decoherence Time effectively infinite within the crisis timescale; and the violence is experienced as necessary defence rather than aggression. The violence either succeeds, destroying the scapegoated group while leaving the underlying M-dynamics unresolved, or fails catastrophically. The Terminal Phase is the attractor region of the crisis parameter space, the default outcome absent exogenous intervention, and the Calcified-to-Terminal transition is a discontinuous fold rather than a gradual decline.
Explanation
This is the stage at which a society's conviction that some group is to blame has become certain and turns into violence that feels, to those doing it, like self-defence. It is where an unmanaged crisis tends to end up, and the step into it is a sudden collapse rather than a slide, which is why it has to be headed off earlier rather than reversed once it arrives.
