Grievance Belief

Canonical definition

A Grievance Belief is the Belief an Individual holds about a specific Individual-Object when the Agent-Type hypothesis for that Object in the Belief Register concentrates on its Predator and Rival coordinates: the Belief that the agent is taking, blocking, or threatening. It reaches that concentration by either of two routes. Ground-Resolution on a felt deficit whose Object the agent gates supplies one, under Source Opacity (Axiom 3), Confabulation (Axiom 4) and the Agent-Based Causal Default (Axiom 9). The other requires no deficit: the Agent-Type classifier updates on non-behavioural evidence, so presentation, group affiliation and proximity move the Predator weight directly, and the Predator and Prey coordinates update faster than the Collaborator and Rival coordinates that would redistribute weight away from them. A concentration sustained by restatement alone follows from the Self-Coupling term and the network Evidence-coupling, whose effect is set by the cycle count over which the incumbent hypothesis is restated rather than by the evidential weight of any single restatement. By either route the Grievance Belief is written to the Belief Register as a prior about that agent, where it conditions the Observer's read of the agent on every subsequent encounter and is re-emitted as Evidence on every cycle by the Self-Coupling term, so that it persists after any deficit that forced it has closed. Where the forcing is Rung Loss the deficit does not close, because what the fall leaves is a Salience reading against a comparison set that has not fallen rather than a deficit a consumption could correct, so the forcing is continuous for as long as the believed standing is held (Chapter 15, Section 15.10.2). The deficit is the forcing of a Grievance Belief and not its content: sustained Appetite deficit raises the likelihood force of every Grievance Belief a population entertains. It is distinguished from a Source Belief, the Individual's distribution over the source Hypotheses for their own want, which occupies a different subspace of the same Hypothesis Space and names no other Individual; and from the Belief-Conditioned Status Estimate, the signed selection variable that reads the agent as extractable or costly. Dual-Role Confabulation is the case in which a Grievance Belief's Predator framing coexists with a Prey selection. The kind-claim that licenses violence against a group is the Prey-selection limb of a Grievance Belief rather than a construct beside it: the ranking discounts the expected cost of acting, which is the cost limb of the Belief-Conditioned Status Estimate, while the Predator framing supplies the authorisation, so a Belief that licenses violence carries both limbs at once. The Grievance Belief is the Belief type on which Conflict (AIM sense) runs. It is the Belief under which the other party's conduct is read as threat, which is the unfavourable estimate that ignites the adversarial branch of the Interactional Confirmation Loop; a Grievance Belief supplies its own confirming evidence by whichever route is available, from the party at the gate, whose guarded or hostile response to being acted against is the conduct the Grievance Belief predicted, or, where that party is reciprocity-exempt and emits nothing, from co-holders, whose expressed Grievance Beliefs arrive as social proof; and by the Extraction-Direction Asymmetry that branch sits closer to its escalation threshold than the cooperative branch to its compounding one, terminating at the action thresholds of the possession layer. Other Belief types compound toward their Objects; none compounds against an agent. Content-Independence holds within the type and not across it. The Grievance Gateway (the Gateway) and the Three-Test Battery are tests applied to a Grievance Belief and to no other Belief. The type is fixed by structure. What makes a Belief a Grievance Belief is the target and the Predator-or-Rival framing. A felt deficit the target gates forces the Belief harder and faster and does not constitute it. The truth-value of a Grievance Belief, whether the attribution corresponds to what actually caused the deficit, and the certainty-value, how strongly the holder holds the Grievance Belief, are the two orthogonal dimensions of Truth-Value Orthogonality, and neither enters the type. An accurate grievance sincerely held, a false one sincerely held, and a narrative cynically deployed by a holder who assigns it no credence are therefore one type running one structure, differing only on axes the structure does not read. Certainty is not thereby inert, since cascade velocity is a function of certainty; what certainty does not do is determine which type of Belief is climbing. The Grievance Belief attaches to a party rather than a role, and its content may place the grievance at either end. What makes a Belief the type is that the holder reads the other party as taker or threat, not which party the holder takes to have been wronged. The type therefore covers the Individual who holds themselves aggrieved by the other; the Individual who is genuinely attacked and reads the attacker as the gate on their safety, whose Grievance Belief is accurate and who is the paradigm case of an accurate one rather than an exception to the type; and the Individual who believes the other is aggrieved at them and reads that grievance as a threat, whose Belief has the same structure though the wrong in its content sits at the holder's own end. The deficit need not be the holder's own. An Individual in whom the Intrinsic empathic signal registers another's deficit, and in whom that signal fuses with an agent-attribution for it, holds a Grievance Belief on the other's behalf; Pseudo-Empathy is that fusion, in which caring about the sufferer and knowing who did it arrive as one state and the care functions as targeting permission (Chapter 11, Section 11.20). This is the ordinary route by which a population none of whose members is personally deprived converges on a target, and it is what the Grievance Gateway's Origin Check screens. A Grievance Belief with no deficit behind it is within the type, and is the unanchored case. The Predator framing carries the authorisation on its own, and where no deficit, the holder's or a sufferer's, is traceable behind the concentration, restatement supplied it. This is what the Grievance Gateway's Origin Check is built to find, so the unanchored case is the most suspect member of the type rather than an exclusion from it, and what it lacks is deficit provenance rather than membership. What falls outside the type is a Belief carrying no Predator framing at all: a Y-dominant classification that licenses violation without the authorisation to act is a Stable Prey Classification. One Grievance Belief is sufficient, and the interface need not be loaded from both ends. A single Grievance Belief loads an interface and can carry it to discharge. The party at the gate need not hold one, need not respond in kind, and need not know that a grievance has been laid at their door. The Scapegoat is that case, and the Prey-selection criterion of reciprocity-exemption selects for a target who will not close the loop, so the one-sided configuration is not a limiting case but the shape the most destructive instances take. Where the second party does form a Grievance Belief, generated by the first party's conduct, the interface is loaded from both ends, and two accounts locked against each other is the configuration at which the Belief Heterogeneity Buffer inverts. Where both parties hold the type, the interface is loaded from both ends, and the moral asymmetry between them survives intact: an attacker and a defender hold the same type and do not thereby stand alike (Chapter 17, Section 17.15).

Explanation

A Grievance Belief is the belief that someone is to blame for what you lack: they took it, they are in the way of it, they are a danger to you. It is not a belief about how the world is, which an answer would settle, and it is not a belief about where your own wanting came from. It is a reading of another person as a taker or a threat, and it comes with an action attached, because getting past that person feels like getting what you were missing. Quarrels, feuds, lawsuits, pogroms and wars run on this belief and on no other kind. A belief about the world stops driving a dispute once the parties agree. A belief about your own motives has nobody in it to fight. Wanting what someone else has inflates a price or a fashion, but it does not turn anyone into an enemy. A Grievance Belief has a target built in, it survives the shortage that produced it, and the more you act on it the more the other person guards or hits back, which is exactly the evidence it needs. Ranking a group as lesser is not a separate belief sitting next to the grievance; it is the part that makes acting on the grievance look cheap. Being lowered by someone also runs on a faster, louder channel than being raised by them, which is why hostility ignites more easily than regard. The Grievance Gateway's first question, whether the grievance is yours, tests whether the belief was copied. Its second and third, whether your body needs the thing and whether you would care if nobody knew, test the Source Belief the grievance carries about the deficit beneath it. Whether the grievance is true, and whether the person holding it means it, are both beside the point: what makes it the dangerous kind is its shape, a person named, read as a taker or a threat, over something you feel the lack of. And the shape does not require that you be the wronged one, or that there be two of you. It covers the person defending themselves against a real attack, the two parties who each think the other started it, and the person who knows they were in the wrong and now watches the other for retaliation. It also covers the person who is not the one wronged at all, but who feels the wrong done to someone else and has settled on who did it, which is how a crowd with no personal grievance of its own ends up with a target. And it does not require that you be able to say what the person did. Disliking someone, or holding them to be wicked, is already the shape: a person read as a taker or a threat. A shortage sharpens that reading and speeds it up, but nothing has to be short for it to form. A face met often enough, in company that treats it as an enemy, will do it, and a belief that arrives that way has no grievance behind it that anyone could state, which is exactly what the first Gateway question is for. The dislike can arrive on a single sighting, and when it does the reasons for it arrive afterwards and feel like its cause. What came first was a signal about how to regard a stranger, and by the time the reasons are available the signal has been written down as a fact about them. What the shape does not cover is a belief with no such reading in it at all. Nor does the other party have to hold anything at all: a scapegoated group is chosen partly because it cannot answer back, and the whole sequence can run to its end with only one side ever holding the belief.
