Debate Exploitation Principle
Canonical definition
The result that any institutional format culturally coded as truth-seeking (debate, adversarial proceeding, public discourse) is structurally exploitable for PM extraction by Individuals who adopt negative, contrarian, or provocative positions purely to generate social Salience. The exploit operates because (a) the cultural Belief that debate is truth-finding confers I-framing on all participants regardless of actual motivation, (b) the PM Production Cost Asymmetry makes negative positions cheaper to produce and higher-yielding than affirmative positions, (c) Source Opacity prevents the audience from distinguishing I-led participation from M-led extraction, and (d) Truth-Value Orthogonality ensures the exploiter suffers no epistemic penalty for being wrong because being correct provides no advantage within coupled dynamics. The principle entails that unmanaged debate formats in high-coupling-strength environments will be progressively colonised by M-led participants whose PM-extraction strategy is camouflaged by the format's cultural coding as truth-seeking.
Explanation
If everyone believes that arguing leads to Truth, then anyone can start an argument purely for the attention it generates, and the audience will assume they must genuinely believe what they're saying, because why else would they argue it? Taking an outrageous or hateful position in a debate is cheap, gets maximum attention, and the debate format itself provides the cover story. Over time, this means debates get taken over by people who don't care about Truth at all but use the format to gain Status.
