Ambient Evidence Amplification Effect

Canonical definition

The Ambient Evidence Amplification Effect is the accumulation, in the Belief Registers of a population, of coupled Evidence delivered continuously by the routine channels the population attends to (background news flow, ambient social media exposure, casual conversation, default platform feeds), item by item and toward the attribution the channels repeat most, with no single item large enough to register as a change of mind and no ignition event required. Three properties of the Evidence channel entail the Ambient Evidence Amplification Effect: once the Thinker is recruited to a question, the weight of an item is set by the coupling to its source and not by its Salience; the Individual holds no channel distinguishing a restatement from independent corroboration, so accumulated weight tracks the count of restatements; and coupling weights are non-negative, so by the Monotone Belief-Race Lemma the race among Hypotheses sorts without circling. The Ambient Evidence Amplification Effect does its work on matters whose Referent the recipients never contact, where each recipient's updating is Contactless Updating and the accumulation that installs a False Belief carries a True Belief away by the same operation, and the Ambient Evidence Amplification Effect runs one way until forced visibility or exogenous Evidence restores contact with the Referent. The Ambient Evidence Amplification Effect is the network counterpart of within-Individual Bayesian Lock-In and is distinct from the Information-Cascade Amplification Effect: where the Information-Cascade Amplification Effect acts through the density of the coupling structure at an instant, the Ambient Evidence Amplification Effect acts through the constancy of what a fixed structure delivers over time.

Explanation

Most of what you come to believe about the wider world you never check: it reaches you through news in the background, feeds and conversation. Each item is small, and none changes your mind on its own. But your mind counts how often it hears something, not how many independent people actually know it, so a claim repeated often enough carries the weight of many witnesses even if it began with one. Because you never touch the thing itself, nothing arrives to push back, and the drip can carry you toward a false belief or away from a true one. It takes no dramatic event and no coordinated campaign, only a channel that does not stop. The Ambient Evidence Amplification Effect is the population-scale reading of the monotone accumulation that, together with the absence of a restoring force at the network scale and Source Opacity's suppression of correction at every node, makes the network-scale bifurcation a Saddle-Node Default rather than a sustained cycle.
